An Authentic Singapore Sling

Recently I flew to the UK with Singapore Airlines and while on the flight I tasted my first Singapore Sling. I was smitten and decided I had to recreate this delicious cocktail for myself. It wasn't as straightforward as you might think!

There are lots of recipes on the web, but I wanted the authentic recipe from the famous Raffles Hotel in Singapore (apparently it was invented in the 1900s by Mr Ngiam Tong Boon, a Hainanese-Chinese bartender). Then I had to find the ingredients (the recipe involves a whole cocktail cabinet of liqueurs) and lastly I had to convert the recipe into meaningful measures that you can find in your kitchen (as in tablespoons and teaspoons instead of fluid ounces). I've done the work – so you don't have to!

First gather your ingredients. You'll need: gin, cherry brandy, Cointreau, Benedictine, Grenadine, pineapple juice, lime juice and some 'bitters'.

The recipe – enough for two drinks, because cocktails are best consumed with company – is as follows:

3 tbsp gin
2 tsp cherry brandy
1 tsp Cointreau
1 tsp Benedictine
8 tbsp pineapple juice
2 tsp lime juice
3/4 tsp Grenadine (measure out 3 x 1/4)
2 drops of bitters

Put everything into a cocktail shaker with some ice. Shake. Serve with a piece of pineapple and a glace cherry. Enjoy!!! But be warned - this is a very potent cocktail!!

Very nice indeed... my first cocktail, if memory serves me well, tasted in Bali many years ago and I do remember thoroughly enjoying it. Rarely does alcohol touch my lips these days, apart from the occasional glass of red with a meal.
Have fun with the Singapore Slings and thanks for sharing this as it has jogged some fun memories for me. x

Wow that looks like quite a drink =) And the presentation looks great. Really I'm hungry for the garnishes.. maybe I should go find some dinner. ^^

Oh, it is! I haven't made a proper cocktail like this for years. It was after I'd tasted one on the flight that I had a hankering after it!
